When the Best Man Plans the Bachelor Party

When you’re asked to be the Best Man for someone’s wedding, that job comes with serious responsibilities. Sure, it looks like it’s all fun and games, but I’m here to tell you that it’s a lot of hard work.

So, my best friend finally asked his long-time girlfriend. Of course, she said yes. She’d been dropping hints for years. Don’t tell her I said this, but I think sheer stubbornness caused her to wear him down.

Don’t get me wrong. I think she’s a wonderful match for my best friend. But any woman willing to wait a decade for a man to come around is either the most patient creature ever or she’s stubborn.

I’ve always been honest with my girlfriends. Anyone looking for a ring will be sorely disappointed. I just don’t plan on getting married, and I don’t want to raise anyone’s hopes.

But I digress. Let’s get back to my best friend’s wedding plans.

Naturally, my best friend asked me to be in his wedding. I agreed without hesitation. Are you kidding me? We basically experienced everything together, so of course I’d want to be part of his special day.

Things were going well until he offhandedly asked me about the bachelor party plans. Wait. Was I supposed to plan that? I rattled off something about girls in minimal clothing serving us cocktails and partying in Costa Rica.

Surprisingly, he didn’t want to do that. Instead he wanted to go on a weeklong camping trip and play paintball.

All I could do was stare at him because it sounds so tame compared to the antics we used to get up to in college.

But I shrugged in acceptance. It was his wedding, so he could do whatever he wanted for his bachelor party.

Later on, I discovered that his fiancée would also have her bachelorette party at the same time. It was highly likely that her group would join us at some point, which made sense why my best friend nixed my first idea.

I wasn’t so keen on being without my creature comforts for a week, but at least I could pick out the campgrounds and such.

I found the perfect luxury cabin for our guys retreat. My best friend wanted something more in the way of pitching tents under the open sky and cooking our food over campfires, but I convinced him that the cabin was a better idea, especially if the girls decided to stop by.

Once the cabin was booked, I planned out the paintball excursion we’d have there. I found a great place that allowed us to use their fields and bring our own paintballs.

I thought it would be a great idea for all of us to have matching tactical vests. Of course, I’d differentiate the groom’s vest with some sort of patch or personalization.

I found a great site that helped me narrow my choices, although it was hard to reach a decision. There were so many cool options. If you’re into tactical type activities or you’re in the military or law enforcement, check out this site.

By the time the day came, I’d made lots of phone calls and had taken care of details that I usually took for granted. We were all looking forward to this week away.

The luxury cabin was definitely a highlight of the trip. If I could go camping like this all the time, I’d never hate the outdoors again. Our cabin felt more like a home, and each of us had our own bedroom and bathroom. We were able to fish, hike, and ride our mountain bikes and then crash in our cabin. It was a great way to stay active and hang out with each other.

Our paintball day was a blast too. We all have the bruises to prove it. My best friend especially enjoyed his vest. We plan on doing this more often before he gets married.

On our last night, the ladies joined us. We all relaxed at our cabin, sharing stories and enjoying the blazing fireplace. There was a game we played that was supposed to predict who would get married next. Everyone was amused when I was the “winner.”

Overall, it was a great week, but I never want to plan this again. My respect for party planners increased by a good margin.

Impressions Matter – the Shure Beta 58A

As a recording artist, I always marvel at the way I use the various instruments to my advantage. The sound that comes out of these instruments adds to my voice, and the result is just awesome. Right before I delved into music, one of my mentors told me the only way to get awesome music is to use only the best equipment. One such mic that I found to be top of the pack is the Shure Beta 58A mic.

This mic is a handheld dynamic microphone ideal for both male and female voices, whether you are belting out a slow, romantic melody or hitting the highs in a rock and roll tune, this mic is the king.

First Impression

When I first opened the box, the weight only made me think no way such a light mic could give me the punch I needed but I was wrong. The design is awesome, and it fits my hand so perfectly. Apart from a great design, you can hammer nails with it (not literally, of course) because it is hardy and withstands the test of harsh conditions.

The first thing I noticed about the Shure Beta 58A is the high, crispy clear sound. The sound was so high that I expected boominess and feedback, but alas, the use of the supercardioid polar pattern keeps the signal so tight that it eliminates any sounds originating from the rear or the sides. At first, I didn’t notice a tiny detail about the Shure Beta that made it a darling globally. One time I listened keenly and got it – the super-high gain that came just before feedback that made each given performance a hit.

Producing great sound isn’t enough for a mic, the mic you have ought to stand up to the game, pub after pub, stage after stage, town after town and city after city.to borrow from Shure’s long history of dependability, the Beta 58A gives you just that.

The performance of the mic is not affected in any way by rough handling due to its rugged construction. Therefore, whether you hold the mic in your hand or go ahead and mount it on a stand, you still achieve the kind of sound that you planned.

Precious Midrange Lift

I haven’t heard this with other mics, maybe counterparts from Shure. However, when using the Shure Beta, I noticed the little midrange lift in the frequency response. This lift occurred smack on the middle of the vocal frequency spectrum (50Hz – 16 kHz). You get to hear it loud and clear.

I would advise you though, if you want to make maximum use of the wide frequencies, make sure you consider your voice timbre and genre of music. This is because these two affect the performance of the microphone and how you will sound.

Hit The Highs – You Have a Cushion

This mic is innovatively designed to handle the high sounds from your amp and guitar. The design makes use of an internal shock-mount system that handles the noise. To make this better, the steel mesh grille is lined with a foam pop filter that allows you to hit the highs, so, get rocking (and rolling) without any hesitation; Shure Beta58A has your back.

I remember this one time when we were on stage strumming, singing and drumming away when all of a sudden my bass guitar player decided to let it rip. He just got so engrossed in the heat of the moment that he decided to be twice as loud. Nothing changed, as I learnt later, the supercardioid pattern rejected the loud peripheral vocals and minimized the feedback like a champ. We got to know about the incident later when he narrated the issue to us.

You might argue that you can still hit the highs using the SM58, but remember the 58A comes with a neodymium magnet, which is more sensitive as compared to the SM58. To be more specific, the output of the beta 58A is 4 decibels higher than its predecessor.

Enhance Your Vocals

I have a softer mellow voice, so my aim was to get a mic that could enhance my vocals in the studio. I tried several other mics but found them wanting. For one, I had to be as close to the mic for these mics to pick my voice and amp it up. The first time I tried the beta 58A I was blows away by the crispy clear sound. In addition, when I cranked the gain a little bit higher, there was no hissing from the speakers. I realized that even when I stayed 1 to 2 inches away from the mic, my voice still came out clear.

The sensitivity is out of this world. This enabled me to change the sound and the feel by distance and positioning.

Got a Band? Get a Few More of These

I don’t work solo all the time, I work with a small band, practicing in the basement for upcoming shows. My backup singer, who doubles as a drummer, has a deep voice that isn’t that strong. We needed a microphone that has a narrower pattern so that it doesn’t pick up a lot of the percussion sounds from the drum. Using this mic picked up the vocals and projected them much better, adding substance to the whole remix. A very interesting side note is when we went to listen in to one of the top bands in the city, we noticed right away that the lead vocalist was using a Shure Beta 58A and he sounded so great.

Well, I have used this mic for live gigs using just an acoustic guitar, and I’ve also used it for practice with my 6 piece band. Either way, it beat any other mic I have used hands down.

The Lowdown

As we speak, I’m planning to purchase another Shure Beta 58A mic just so that when I need an extra singer, I have one of the best mics ready. The Beta 58A makes me want to belt out tune after tune, now the band hates me for making them perform longer. However, they like the fact that they get a superb response after each gig. Even on small stages, I still get the response I want. My mic has kissed the floor so many times to the extent that if it were just another mic, it would be history. But since it is so hardy, it has stood the test of so many bumps and drops.

You don’t believe me? Well, we are so many singers who make use of this mic for their gigs. Check out Shure Beta 58A – Review by Microphone Geeks to know that you need to upgrade your mic – now.

How to Spot Substandard Juicers

If you’re in the market for a juicing machine, you may be wondering how to spot a substandard juice from one of better quality. There are dozens of models on the market. How can you choose a good one?

Do Your Research

The most important thing to research is the types of juicers available. There are centrifugal, masticating, and citrus juicers, and each offer their own advantages and disadvantages.

A centrifugal juicer works like your blender to slice and dice food to produce juice. A masticating unit uses one or two gears to grind food, effectively extracting juice. And a citrus juicer is specifically for citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.

Centrifugal units produce juice more rapidly, but they also end up with more waste material. A masticating juicer takes longer to produce, but uses more of the food product while extracting juice more effectively from hard produce such as carrots and leafy green vegetables.

Many online retailers offer model comparison, so you can look at various but similar machines side-by-side. This allows you to compare features to find the one that’s best for you. You can also discover more useful facts by visiting website about juicing in general.

What to Consider When Purchasing

There are some important things to keep in mind when you’re comparing juicers. Let’s look at some of these features.

Motor Wattage

Wattage might be the most important consideration in a juicer. What does wattage mean for you? Well, juicers must break down foods to extract the juice. Soft foods like berries and oranges can be easily processed, but harder foods are more difficult to chew and will require more power to extract juice.

Juicer wattage ranges from 400 to 1,000 watts. Logic says the higher the wattage, the better the performance. When you’re talking about juicers, this is true as well. Higher wattage motors won’t bog down under a heavy load and can stand up to longer stretches of use without overheating.

Extra Features

Many juicers offer extra features to make the juicing experience more pleasant. These features can include:

  • Pulp Ejection—some juicers have internal pulp (waste) storage, which may require removing parts of the juicer to clean out. External pulp reservoirs make it easier to clean out.
  • Adjustable speeds—having two or more motor speeds can help you extract juice from foods with different density. Juicing soft foods at high speeds can cause frothing of the juice.
  • Large Feed Tube—this lets you put foods into the juicer in larger pieces, reducing your preparation time.
  • Self-Cleaning—some masticating juicers are self-cleaning, reducing the time spent cleaning the machine.
  • Twin Gears—on masticating juicers, double gears will produce juice faster than a single gear.
  • Slicer—some citrus juicers have a built-in slicer, which reduces prep time.
  • Multiple Reamers—on some citrus juicers, you’ll find more than one reamer. This allows you to juice two fruit halves at one, cutting down on time.
  • Reamer Size Attachments—some citrus juicers have assorted size reamers to accommodate both large and small fruits.

Read Reviews by Actual Consumers

Another way to spot a substandard juicer is to take the time to read reviews left on retailer websites. Most of these reviews are by actual customers who purchased and used the product.

Make it a point to read the bad reviews as well as the good. Some of these bad reviews may amount to nothing more than “I didn’t like using the juicer”, but others may well give you insights into the long-term use of the machine.

Read any review and take the information with a grain of salt. Ask yourself how these comments may affect you personally. If someone says, “this juicer takes a lot of time” and you want something that’s quick and easy, you’ve just learned valuable information.

Don’t Be Fooled by Brand Names

As with a lot of products, sometimes what you’re paying for is the brand name. But, often that doesn’t equate to quality. This is one reason reading reviews is critical in helping you decide on your purchase.

Instead of jumping at a brand-name juicer, look at the features, paying close attention to motor wattage. Just because it has a reputable name attached to the juicer doesn’t mean its features will live up to that name.

Conclusion

Now you’ll have a better idea what to look for when you’re shopping for a juicer. Hopefully the tips listed here will let you pick a great juicer that will give you a long life of healthy juicing!
