When the Best Man Plans the Bachelor Party

When you’re asked to be the Best Man for someone’s wedding, that job comes with serious responsibilities. Sure, it looks like it’s all fun and games, but I’m here to tell you that it’s a lot of hard work.

So, my best friend finally asked his long-time girlfriend. Of course, she said yes. She’d been dropping hints for years. Don’t tell her I said this, but I think sheer stubbornness caused her to wear him down.

Don’t get me wrong. I think she’s a wonderful match for my best friend. But any woman willing to wait a decade for a man to come around is either the most patient creature ever or she’s stubborn.

I’ve always been honest with my girlfriends. Anyone looking for a ring will be sorely disappointed. I just don’t plan on getting married, and I don’t want to raise anyone’s hopes.

But I digress. Let’s get back to my best friend’s wedding plans.

Naturally, my best friend asked me to be in his wedding. I agreed without hesitation. Are you kidding me? We basically experienced everything together, so of course I’d want to be part of his special day.

Things were going well until he offhandedly asked me about the bachelor party plans. Wait. Was I supposed to plan that? I rattled off something about girls in minimal clothing serving us cocktails and partying in Costa Rica.

Surprisingly, he didn’t want to do that. Instead he wanted to go on a weeklong camping trip and play paintball.

All I could do was stare at him because it sounds so tame compared to the antics we used to get up to in college.

But I shrugged in acceptance. It was his wedding, so he could do whatever he wanted for his bachelor party.

Later on, I discovered that his fiancée would also have her bachelorette party at the same time. It was highly likely that her group would join us at some point, which made sense why my best friend nixed my first idea.

I wasn’t so keen on being without my creature comforts for a week, but at least I could pick out the campgrounds and such.

I found the perfect luxury cabin for our guys retreat. My best friend wanted something more in the way of pitching tents under the open sky and cooking our food over campfires, but I convinced him that the cabin was a better idea, especially if the girls decided to stop by.

Once the cabin was booked, I planned out the paintball excursion we’d have there. I found a great place that allowed us to use their fields and bring our own paintballs.

I thought it would be a great idea for all of us to have matching tactical vests. Of course, I’d differentiate the groom’s vest with some sort of patch or personalization.

I found a great site that helped me narrow my choices, although it was hard to reach a decision. There were so many cool options. If you’re into tactical type activities or you’re in the military or law enforcement, check out this site.

By the time the day came, I’d made lots of phone calls and had taken care of details that I usually took for granted. We were all looking forward to this week away.

The luxury cabin was definitely a highlight of the trip. If I could go camping like this all the time, I’d never hate the outdoors again. Our cabin felt more like a home, and each of us had our own bedroom and bathroom. We were able to fish, hike, and ride our mountain bikes and then crash in our cabin. It was a great way to stay active and hang out with each other.

Our paintball day was a blast too. We all have the bruises to prove it. My best friend especially enjoyed his vest. We plan on doing this more often before he gets married.

On our last night, the ladies joined us. We all relaxed at our cabin, sharing stories and enjoying the blazing fireplace. There was a game we played that was supposed to predict who would get married next. Everyone was amused when I was the “winner.”

Overall, it was a great week, but I never want to plan this again. My respect for party planners increased by a good margin.
